Character Information
Name: Winry Rockbell
Canon Origin/Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
School Year: 5th
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Out of school living location: Jühnde, Saxony, Germany
Blood status: Half-Blood

Personality: In her canon, Winry was born in 1899 in the fictional country of Amestris, one which parallels Germany but with various anachronisms. Due to the time period, and the village she was raised in, Winry is significantly more mature, confident, and independent than one would expect of someone her age. This is an aspect carried by almost all the children of FMA, and not just the primary and secondary characters, even background characters are shown to already have a good deal of independence. An example being Nelly, a girl and friend of the Rockbells and Elrics who already takes care of the animals and farm her family owns. For what we've seen of Rizenbul almost all of the kids take up their parents trade at an early age.

Since SH!Winry will be lacking this, and growing up in a time where children are much more protected and pampered, she will be a bit more passive and shy than her canon counterpart. Jühnde is still considered a village, but is of course much more modern than Rizenbul ever was. She spent most of her time studying, and especially when the Elrics left kept her head in her books and so she never really became much of a social butterfly and is largely uncomfortable with people at first. Combined with the incident that happened in their lives, it actually makes her a smidgen phobic of people she is not familiar with and uncomfortable with attention outside the professional realm (that is she doesn't mind speaking with people of work of any sort, but when conversations become casual or personal it's a no-no for her--at least when she is the subject at hand).

This is only the first impression people get of Winry. With the Elrics, and with those she eventually becomes friends with and closer her canon self shines through. Once someone gets to know her, the most prominent features of Winry are her determination and intelligence. Even if she is on the shy side at first, that does not equate to her being a pushover or weak. Any attempts at bullying her or anyone else will end badly for the bullier. Once she sets herself to something, she will do it not matter what, even if it means stepping on some toes or doing some lying and sneaking around. She isn't the kind to tolerate self-deprecation or wallowing in self-pity, and definitely does not stand for anyone giving up before they have even started. Winry rarely ever does anything half-way, when she decides on something, she throws on it entirely.

This is particularly obvious when it comes to her work. Granted, a lot of the reason she studies so much is so she can help the Elrics, but she genuinely loves to learn and be challenged. What she loves most is being given something she has yet to see or know about, and taking it apart--both figuratively, and literally. It extends into her having a great curiosity to just about everything and everyone which can sometimes land her in a difficult position. She takes great pride in her work, both as a mechanic and medi-witch and has great respect for anyone who is passionate about their work, whatever it may be.

She's a pretty sentimental character sometimes. She has very deep value for family, whether it be blood or otherwise which is why she is always constantly worried about the Elrics, and thus appears so often aggravated and angry (particularly at Ed). Her family values shine through in not only how she loves the Elrics, but her grandmother and how she treasures the memory of her parents. Even if someone is older than her she might come off as mothering sometimes--she knows better than to pamper them since it would come off as patronizing, but she will butt into someone's business if her concern becomes extreme. She also always has her door open to discuss problems if anyone ever wants to come to her of their own accord. She manages to do much of her nudging in a very inconspicuous manner.

Ironically, even though she is kind-spirited in that manner, she also has has a terrifyingly large temper. Anger is something that Winry unfortunately has a lot of, to the point of it almost being unhealthy. In some ways it helps--she gets angry more than she gets upset so it can serve as a driving force as opposed to wallowing--but anger of course is a very dangerous emotion so it sometimes leads her to take very aggressive and impulsive actions. This is shown in small portions by her habit of wrenching or punching people when they annoy her, which happens regularly (at least where Ed is concerned) but even this is only scratching at the surface. After all, she was willing to pick up a gun and point it at someone, and even if she didn't shoot that is still a very significant action. She is a person easy to anger, but easy to forgive (or at least tolerate). She isn’t the type to hold grudges and despite her tantrums she would never seriously harm anyone close to her, and learns to persevere both emotionally and the presence of others.

Despite everything she has been through she remains quite optimistic and has a generally cheerful attitude. She has a sometimes quirky, sometimes odd sense of humor and loves to tease and taunt those she is fond of. It has a habit of getting her into a lot of trouble, but she somehow always manages to slip out. Only on very rare occasions does her true anger, bitterness, and depression for all the things that have happened. She can be quite impulsive at times, sensitive, and shrill but she does mean well, and has a heavy sense of duty.

Canon Background: Winry Rockbell grew up in a village called Rizenbul. She was the only child of the two doctors, Sara and Urey Rockbell. Her grandmother on her father’s side is Pinako Rockbell, and an automail mechanic and engineer.Winry grew up along with the Elric family, consisting of Edward, Alphonse, and their mother Trisha. The Elrics were like a secondary family and home to her.

From a very early age Winry studied her parents vocation, but she always seemed more interested in automail. Since automail engineering requires a good amount of medical knowledge she tried to create a balance between the two.

When she was about six years old, Winry’s parents entered into the Ishbal War as doctors helping both Amestrians and Ishballan alike. Unfortunately only a couple years later the Elrics lost their mother as well, and the two immersed themselves in the study of alchemy to try and find a way to bring her back.

The Elrics attempted the human transmutation to bring their mother back to life, however they didn’t realize that in attempting this illegal action they were breaking the most important rule of alchemy, that of equivalent exchange, giving up the same amount for what you receive. They had all the necessary ingredients for a human body, however there is no price that can equal a soul and that ended in disaster. Edward lost one of his legs, and Al his entire body in the process but Edward gave up one of his arms to attach Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor.

Winry and Pinako helped the both of them in their recovery and Winry was the one who built Edward’s automail. After several months of recovery for Ed he went to Central and join the military there in order to gain access to information, in hopes of regaining their bodies and setting things straight.

Things only went downhill from there, and soon the Elrics, and then eventually Winry found themselves immersed in the plot of some creatures known has homunculi

Background (AU!Canon; HP): (Billie) Pinako Rockbell was a prominent half-blood Witch, first as a Quidditch player who could "scare anyone off their broom" and then particularly in the field of medimagic. She is most famous for how well she managed to synthesize magic with muggle technology. Her son Urey was born without magic, a trait he inherited from his grandfather, and he eventually married a Sara Hegedüs in Hungary.

Winry was born to them, and even when she was only a few months old she began to show signs of inheriting the magical gene of her grandmother. When this happened Sara and Urey returned to Jühnde where they continued their trade by being the village doctors. They lived in tune with the Elrics. Hohenheim Elric was a close friend of Pinako's, and just as much a prominent wizard, if not more than her, and so Winry was raised with the two young boys of that family, Edward and Alphonse. As such, despite there being no blood connection, Winry still regards and addresses them as "her brothers".

As she grew up, Winry learned a lot about her parent's trade. Even though magic nullified many things of muggle medical practices, she was still fascinated by it. After all, as aforementioned Winry loves to be challenged, and so if anything it was the very fact that muggle methods are often painstaking that drew her to them. It was that and the incredibly close relationship Winry had with her parents. Even to this day after their death, Winry still dotes and idealizes them to an extreme extent. Along with her parents trade, she of course got interested in her grandmother's since it tied in rather closely. She got a deep interest in technology, and particular the mechanical prosthetics her grandmother specialized in.

Unfortunately this happy portrait was broken when Edward and Winry were nine, and Alphonse eight. Pinako and Hohenheim were both powerful wizards, but they had sullied their names by living and marrying Muggles. Jühnde was targeted by some over-ambitious and thoughtless dark wizards. Some of the population of Jühnde got caught up in the fray, but the primary targets had been the Elric and Rockbell family. Both of Winry's parents were killed, as was the mother of the Elrics, Trisha.

The rest were left for dead. Years later, when she is eleven Winry is still not entirely recovered, and wanting to complete her training with Pinako so she at first remains home, training and studying the curriculum. It is at fifteen that she has finally decided to go to learn at Hogwarts.

The classes she excels at are Potions and Medimagic. She is also pretty good at flying. Unfortunately her History and Transfiguration and most definitely Divination aren't quite what they should be (the latter she completely bombs and has little care for). All other classes she does well enough in. (Jean)

How would your character fit in to each House?

Gryffindor: Talk about bold. As I mentioned before, SH Winry may be a little more shy about meeting people, and she may mostly keep to herself but that by no means says she is a pushover. If she feels that something wrong is happening, she will definitely step in. She is a person who feels very strongly about just everything and it isn't so much a matter as her being easy to read, and it is that she doesn't bother nor want to hide said feelings--only on very rare occasions does she.

She is a stand-up kind of person where it counts, definitely the courageous sort--or perhaps stupidly adventurous would be more like it, as they say curiosity killed the cat, and she hates to remain on the sidelines.

Slytherin: Winry likes to take matters into her own hands. Perhaps it is in part due to her earlier years where she felt all she had ever done was wait, but those days are over. She has decided on some goals, and is determined to see them through at any costs, even if it involves (lightly) stepping on some toes and sacrifice. It's true that Winry would never bring great harm to an innocent, but if anyone stands in her way she has absolutely no qualms about pushing them aside or giving them a good wrench.

She is an incredibly capable and versatile person, and once you get past the shy and friendly personality and she is comfortable with you, it is evident that she is definitely not one you want to make angry. Anger is something she unfortunately has a lot of, to the point it could almost be considered detrimental to her health.

Hufflepuff: Family is the utmost important thing to Winry, and followed by that are friends. She is the kind of person who is friendly to most everyone, and willing to help out all that she. It should be noted, however, that Winry does this more out of a sense of duty. She is a kind girl, but having been raised to be a doctor and by very judicious parents she feels that it is only the natural thing to do.

While Winry is very friendly, it takes a lot for her to really consider herself close to someone, but when she does it is a bond that would be very difficult to break. When it comes to the people she really cares about, she can be quite the hardass, and very different from what she first seemed (ie. much more like her tsundere canon self).

Ravenclaw: Intelligence is something that Winry has never lacked. From a young age she's been trained by her parents who were both doctors, and her grandmother who made prosthetics. While none of the people she was raised by knew magic, her grandmother was well aware of it, and knew Winry showed signs of carrying the magical gene so she studied that as well. She has a penchant for knowledge of all kinds, muggle and wizard alike and so if often cooped up with a book, drawing blueprints, or listening to others speak of what they knew.

Particularly since her primary aim in coming to Hogwarts was so she could help the Elrics, she spends a bit more time studying than she should. Without a doubt she prefers the company of books to people, and more than anything she enjoys a good challenge.

Sample Journal Entry: [ Text ] Wow it feels great to finally get one of these! I've been wanting one ever since I saw Ed get his. They're really convenient, aren't they? Got to hand it to the people who enchanted these things, to last this long is pretty impressive; but I guess they Hogwarts teachers so I it's to be expected.

I suppose I should introduced myself. My name is Winry and I'll be entering Hogwarts next year with the fifth years. Up until now I've mostly been home schooled. I'm still not sure what house I'm going to be in--I'll be sorted with the first years, I suppose?

Till then, I suppose I should get cracking on these books.

Sample Interaction Post in Third Person: How many times had she seen Edward and Alphonse board and get off this train? At the least eight times for Edward, six for Alphonse and that wasn't counting when they had come and left for holidays. It felt weird to be on that platform, knowing that this time she too would be stepping on. She stood before it, staring up and down the length of the train. It had always awed and excited her, it was the sort of thing she loved to study the most. Muggle mechanics infused with magic. Today, however, above everything else it intimidated her.

This would be the train that would take her away from the place she called home for the first time in years. She would be going off to live away from her grandmother, in a place full of a bunch of strangers in a purely wizard environment. Granted Winry had had her grandmother who was a prominent witch, and Hohenheim who was like a second father who assured that she, Ed, and Al never disconnected too much from their roots but...but she had always preferred to stay in Rizenbul. This would be very different from her previous experiences.

Regardless, her slight phobia of strangers was usurped by that unquenchable desire to learn that had driven her all of her life. Pinako seemed to believe she had taught her all she could, and now her eyes were set on the infamous Hogwarts.

With a deep breath, she stepped onto the train.
